Five Things to Look For When Choosing a Photographer
You've decided it's time to capture new photos! Whether you are looking to have new photos of your family, a milestone such as an engagement, maternity or senior year, or just for fun, the first step to getting your hands on new cherished photos is choosing a photographer. How does one possibly choose?! Here are five things to look for when picking the photographer that is the best fit for you!
1. Identify your style
We all have preferred styles for our photos. Some photo styles include:
- Light and Airy
- Dark and Moody
- Bright and Bold
- Studio
Identify what types of photos you are drawn to and then find a photographer that fits your style! If light and airy photos make your heart sing, look for a light and airy photographer. If bright and bold is your thing, connect with a photographer that captures bright and bold photos. Choose a photographer who has a vision similar to your vision.
2. Notice how you feel when looking at a photographer's portfolio
Your feelings when looking at a photographer's work can be a huge tell on whether that photographer is a good fit for you. If you get excited about the idea of having photos similar to what you see in the portfolio, then that photographer would be a good match for you!
3. Type of Session
Photographers specialize in different types of sessions. If you are looking for a maternity photographer, you probably shouldn't hire a wedding photographer. If you are in need of a senior photographer, then a photographer who specializes in newborns would not be ideal. Choose a photographer that specializes and offers exactly what you are looking for.
4. Connection with the photographer
Even if a photographer has your preferred style and specializes in your type of session, that photographer still might not be the best fit if you do not connect with them and who they are. Photo sessions and the entire experience is more enjoyable, fun, and memorable when you click with the photographer (no pun intended). Find a photographer you can connect with. How can you find out if you would connect well with the photographer? Take a look at their social media accounts, their "About" section on their website, or don't be afraid to reach out to start a conversation. Get to know them a bit and you will find if you are a match.
5. Cost
Of course your budget plays a role in which photographer you choose. You need to be sure the cost fits into the amount you have decided to spend. Don't just pick the photographer that is the "best deal", but rather pick the photographer that fits in your budget AND hits all of the points previously discussed above.
